Movie Review - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

no comments»

Directed by: Gore Verbinski

Cast: Johnny Depp, Keira Knightely, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Tom Hollander

The sage of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and crew continues in this latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, that is quite a bit better than the last film (but that’s not saying much). If you recall, Sparrow was eaten by the Krakken at the end of Dead Man’s Chest, so this film begins with Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightely), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and the newly resurrected Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) on a mission to retrieve Jack from Davy Jones’ Locker.

Meanwhile, the East India Trading Company, lead by Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), has stepped up its efforts to eliminate piracy from its waters with the help of a now heartless and indentured Davy Jones. A meeting of the “Pirate Lords” is called to address the threat…

The Good:

The film benefits immensely from the return of Geoffrey Rush. Davy Jones just simply isn’t the villain that Captain Barbossa was, and his character makes a perfect foil for Captain Jack.

After having his character assassinated (in both senses of the word) in the last installment, the Captain Jack that we all know and love from the first Pirates is back in this film.

The special effects are first rate.

It’s better than Dead Man’s Chest. The characterizations are generally better, and there are no scenes that seem tacked on for no real reason (see the island chase scene in DMC for reference)

The Bad:

It’s not much better than Dead Man’s Chest. The plot is still overly complicated, and the film still drags on way to long. It just isn’t as fun as the first pirates.

Bloom and Knightley are as dull as ever. I kind of pity the crew of the Flying Dutchmen.

The Ugly:

The final battle is just plain boring. Just how long can two ships circle a whirlpool any way?

Banderas and Depp to head to Sin City?

MTV is reporting that Robert Rodriguez has indicated that both Johnny Depp and Antonio Banderas are both interested in appearing in the upcoming Sin City sequels. The article also confirms that Rosario Dawson will be reprising her role as barely dressed hooker Gail in Sin City 2.

Having Depp and Banderas onboard would be awesome - it’d be like a Once Upon a Time in Mexico reunion. Hopefully everyone’s schedules line up.
